'most critical writing is drivel and half of it is dishonest. it is a short cut to oblivion, anyway. thinking in terms of ideas destroys the power to think in terms of emotions and sensations.' _ raymond chandler
'there is something about the literary life that repels me, all this desperate building of castles on cobwebs, the long-drawn acrimonious struggle to make something important which we all know will be gone forever in a few years, the miasma of failure which is to me almost as offensive as the cheap gaudiness of popular success.' _ raymond chandler
'convey my compliments to the purist who reads your proofs and tell him or her that I write in a sort of broken-down patois which is something like the way a swiss-waiter talks, and that when I split an infinitive, god damn it, I split it so it will remain split, and when I interrupt the velvety smoothness of my more or less literate syntax with a few sudden words of barroom vernacular, this is done with the eyes wide open and the mind relaxed and attentive. the method may not be perfect, but it is all I have.' _ raymond chandler
'Well, the most remarkable thing about him was how he would sit down to work out everything that might conceivably happen to him in the next ten years, and then make plans in advance. There is nothing that most people find harder to understand than that a man can continuously scheme to meet all the contingencies that might occur five years ahead. The word used for this is opportunism. But very few people are genuinely opportunists. It takes not only clarity of mind about oneself, which is fairly common; but a stubborn and driving energy, which is rare.' _ doris lessing. the golden notebook. 1962
to import a .dwg file into illustrator, and retain the layer structure, you only need to save the .dwg as an acad2000v file - and then you'll be able to open it directly in AI. no dicking around with exporting it as eps, printing it as a PDF, etc. only illustrator cs2 seems to be able to do this; it doesn't seem to work on cs4. adobe removed this functionality from later versions? wish i'd known this years ago.
cowichan sweaters. hbc screwed up with the canadian winter olympic line; could have been a great tie-in and fund-raising opportunity for many local craftspeople, instead of a hollow stylistic-parody. sure, there would have been production and distribution hurdles, but with so much time to prepare for the games it seems surmountable. it's a small protest, but deserves to be bigger. more here.
wikipedia: the parasite enters through the gills, and then attaches itself at the base of the spotted rose snapper's tongue. it then proceeds to extract blood through the claws on its front and less blood reaches the tongue, and eventually the organ atrophies from lack of blood. the parasite then replaces the fish's tongue by attaching its own body to the muscles of the tongue stub. the fish is able to use the parasite just like a normal tongue. it appears that the parasite does not cause any other damage to the host fish. once C. exigua replaces the tongue, some feed on the host's blood and many others feed on fish mucus. they do not eat scraps of the fish's food. this is the only known case of a parasite functionally replacing a host organ.
this song really grew in the past few months. video totally misses the mood; slowmo/speedup is the cheapest representation of melancholy. roy andersson next time, please. also: where is ratatat, why is drake in the video if he's not on the song, and why is the lighting so awful?
